The cycle of digestate & slurry separation

Digestate separation in its original form added with the possibility of keeping digestate or slurry in a closed emission-free cycle – this is possible thanks to Sepogant Direkt!

The problem & the solution

Due to the new regulations of TA Luft (German Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control), digestate may only be separated and stored in closed spaces or while covered. This new regulation poses a serious challenge to many agricultural enterprises.

The Sepogant Direkt screw press separator is the solution to this restriction. This special separator can be integrated into the biogas plant in various ways and is thus included in a holistic cycle.

We are rethinking separation: The Sepogant Direkt separates within the fermentation line!

The process

Sepogant Direkt removes substrate from the digester or post-digester in order to return it right after separation together with the thickened phase and the not yet fully fermented fibrous materials. This feeds the material that is not yet fully fermented (fibre > 0.5 mm) back into the digester/post-digester and gives it time to ferment further – because different feedstocks take different lengths of time to ferment.

Thanks to Sepogant Direkt, you can do without collecting the solid phase and regularly refeeding it via the feeding technology, as is already successfully implemented in practice. This has the advantage of no additional emissions that occur outside, as the Sepogant Direkt technology is a closed system. It also saves working time, and there is no need for transport between the place where the separated solid material is located and the fermentation container (e.g., digester). This results in further emission and cost savings that would be caused by transport or intermediate storage.

Sepogant Direkt can also be used with difficult input material that causes problems during the fermentation process, such as the accumulation of a large amount of long-fibre material.

The refeeding method saves feedstock. This leads to the entire gas potential of the fed substrates being utilised. In addition, mixers and their stirring times in the digestate storage are saved, as there is a homogeneous mass of the same structure in the containers, which does not separate again. Sepogant Direkt allows the operator to implement the existing process efficiently and with labour savings. Furthermore, some feedstock volume is saved during feeding, which results in less stress (energy and wear) on the feeding technology.

Optionally, both a wet grinder and an ultrasound system can be embedded in the digestate and slurry separation cycle with Sepogant Direkt. This helps break down even more dry matter in the substrate into biogas.

Advantages Sepogant Direkt

  • closed & emission-free cycle of slurry and digestate separation
  • higher utilisation of the gas potential by 5% – 10%
  • no ammonia losses and additional costs for transport/storage
  • substrate savings, due to complete substrate utilisation
  • savings in fermentation residue storage volume
  • savings on agitators

In a nutshell

It is possible to achieve a smooth and emission-free cycle of digestate and slurry separation embedded in a biogas plant by ensuring that, once it has entered the fermentation cycle, the substrate does not leave this cycle anymore. This can be ensured by Sepogant Direkt’s separation technology, as here, feedstock separation takes place in a closed system, and the solid phase is not discharged as before but can be refed into the biogas plant.

Thus, the cycle remains closed even with digestate and slurry separation.
